“What You Do” VS “Who You Are”

You Are a Unique Vintage: What Wine and the I Ching Teach About Human Nature

Have you ever seen a wine expert taste a glass of wine?

They swirl the glass, take a small sip, and begin to tell a story:
“This wine is from a sunny hill in Italy. The grapes were picked in a dry summer. It was aged in an oak barrel for two years. You can taste berries and a little smoke.”

We listen, amazed. The story makes the wine feel special.
But at the end, the expert often says something very simple:

“The best wine is the one you like the most.”

That sentence made me stop.
Because I found the same idea in an ancient Asian book called the I Ching (Book of Changes).
It teaches something powerful: every person has their own “flavor.”

People Are Like Wine

The I Ching says that when and where you were born shapes your basic nature.
The season, the location, the culture, the energy around you—all of these affect your “ingredients.”

Like wine, we are all made from different grapes, from different lands, at different times.

You may be quiet and gentle.
Another person may be strong and bold.
Some are planners. Some are dreamers.
None is better. All are different.

No One Is Better Than You

Wine experts sometimes give scores—like 93 points for one wine, 88 for another.
But real wine lovers know: a high score doesn’t matter if you don’t enjoy it.

The I Ching teaches the same lesson.
People are not numbers.
There is no “best” person.

Your story is not higher or lower than someone else’s.
It is just your story.
Your nature is not right or wrong. It’s just true.

Understand Your Own Nature

When you know what kind of “wine” you are, life becomes easier.

If a wine is naturally dry, it should not try to be sweet.
If you are naturally calm and patient, you don’t need to act fast and loud like others.
And if you are full of energy and fire, you should not feel bad for being bold.

The I Ching says:
“Know yourself, and live in harmony with your true nature.”

That is not weakness—it is strength.

The World Needs Every Flavor

A good wine shop doesn’t only sell one kind of wine.
It has many: red, white, dry, sweet, bold, light.

In the same way, the world needs many kinds of people:
Leaders and listeners.
Thinkers and feelers.
Doers and dreamers.

Each person adds value.
Each person is needed.

You Are a Rare Vintage

So I ask you:
What is your flavor?
What season were you born in?
What strengths do you carry?

Your life is a story that only you can live.
You are a one-of-a-kind bottle—aged by time, shaped by nature, and full of meaning.

There is no need to compare.
There is great value in simply being fully you.

What is your unique vintage?
Feel free to share your thoughts with me. I’d love to hear your story.
